Renovation Questions, Answered
Deposits, licences, WCB, permits and how quotes work, in plain language.
How do I get a quote?
Send the quote form, call or WhatsApp (587) 889-9626. Photos of the space help. After a site visit you get a written, itemized quote.
Do you do both residential and commercial work?
Yes. Bedrock Contracting does residential and commercial renovation and construction, from basements, kitchens and bathrooms to office and retail fit-outs.
Which areas do you serve?
Bedrock Contracting is based in Calgary and works across the city and nearby communities. If you're outside Calgary, ask and we'll tell you straight away whether we can take your project on.
Is it safe to pay a contractor a deposit in Alberta?
Only pay a deposit to a contractor licensed by Service Alberta as a prepaid contractor. Alberta requires that licence before a contractor can take money before the work is finished, and licensed contractors post security with the province. Bedrock Contracting holds a prepaid contractor licence, and you can check it on Service Alberta's licensed business search.
How can I check a contractor's licence?
Search the business name on Service Alberta's licensed business search for a prepaid contractor licence, and use the City of Calgary's contractor licence search for the City business licence. Bedrock Contracting is listed by Service Alberta as Bedrock Contracting Canada, Prepaid Contractor, Calgary.
What is a WCB clearance letter and do I need one?
A WCB clearance letter from WCB-Alberta confirms a contractor's account is in good standing. It protects whoever hires the contractor from being held liable for the contractor's unpaid premiums. Ask for one before work starts. Bedrock Contracting is WCB covered.
Do I need a permit to develop my basement in Calgary?
Usually, yes. The City of Calgary requires a building permit for basement work that adds walls, electrical or plumbing. Your written contract should say who is responsible for getting permits and booking inspections.
Can you build a legal basement suite?
A legal suite needs its own kitchen, bathroom and sleeping areas, safe exits, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and fire separation, and it must meet the City's current land-use rules. Calgary changed its suite rules in August 2026, so check the City's latest guidance first. Ask us and we'll talk through your plan.
Can I stay in my home during a renovation?
For most kitchen, bathroom and basement work, yes, though the room being renovated will be out of use for a while. Ask before work starts what to expect for your project.
Do you work on commercial projects?
Yes. Bedrock Contracting renovates offices, shops and retail units as well as homes. Business owners and landlords can ask for a WCB clearance letter and a certificate of insurance before work starts.
What should I check before the final payment?
Walk through the finished work with your contractor, and check the Alberta Land Titles office for any builder's liens registered against your property. The City of Calgary recommends this before the final payment.
